Our Members
The members of the AAMC are institutions rather than individuals.
Founded in 1876, the AAMC originally represented only medical schools. Today, our membership is comprised of:
We also represent the nation's 67,000 medical students and 104,000 residents. Each AAMC-member medical school has one primary and up to three alternate student
participants in the Organization of Student
Representatives. Members of the Organization
of Resident Representatives are appointed by academic societies that
represent department chairs and program directors.
Eligible Institutions
Medical schools in the U.S. and Canada
accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) are eligible
for AAMC membership.
Not-for-profit teaching
hospitals in the U.S. and Canada are eligible if they are affiliated
with a medical school member and offer residency programs in at least
four specialties. (The latter requirement may be waived for specialty
institutions such as psychiatric or rehabilitation hospitals.)
Academic
society members are 501(c)3 organizations with primary missions that
include advancing medical education and/or biomedical research.
Professional Development Groups
The AAMC does not offer individual memberships.
However, the AAMC supports a number of professional
development groups for individuals in leadership positions at member
medical schools, teaching hospitals, and academic societies.
Membership
in all groups except the Group on Educational
Affairs requires appointment by the medical school dean, teaching
hospital executive, or academic society president. All individuals at
U.S. and Canadian medical schools with an interest in medical education
may join the Group on Educational Affairs.
Professional Development Group Membership
The member price for publications is extended to individuals at
AAMC-member medical schools and teaching hospitals.
Members of AAMC professional development groups also may be given access to members-only resources on the AAMC Web site.
To determine your access to these resources,
please contact an AAMC staff member affiliated with your governance or professional
development group.
