Diversity Initiatives

The AAMC is working to increase diversity in medical education and advance health care equity in the U.S. Our efforts are in three general areas:

  • Diversifying the Applicant Pool
    Early enrichment and intervention programs for high school and college students considering medical school

  • Serving Applicants and Medical Students
    Programs and services for students applying to and in medical school

  • Supporting Medical School Faculty and Administration
    Programs and services for faculty, staff, administrators of medical schools, and medical school graduates

Diversifying the Applicant Pool

Holistic Review Project
The AAMC's Holistic Review Project was designed to develop tools and resources that medical schools can use to create and sustain medical student diversity. The project focuses on the application and admissions process in the context of medical school mission and goals and other institutional diversity initiatives.

Roadmap to Diversity: Key Legal and Educational Policy Foundations for Medical Schools
The publication was produced to help medical schools align admissions to mission and establish and implement institution-specific, diversity-related policies that will advance their core educational goals with minimal legal risk.

AspiringDocs.org
The AAMC's research-based outreach campaign is designed to raise awareness of the critical need for more diversity in medicine and to encourage well-prepared African American, Latino/a, and Native American students to apply to and enroll in medical school.

Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)
SMDEP is a free (full tuition, housing, and meals) six-week summer medical and dental school preparatory program that offers eligible students intensive and personalized medical and dental school preparation.

The Diversity Research Forum: Exploring Diversity in the Physician Workforce
The Division of Diversity Policy and Programs convened this forum during the 2006 AAMC Annual Meeting to provide an overview of research on physician diversity and to underscore the role diversity plays in the physician workforce. Topics include research studies, methodological issues, and policy implications.

The Diversity Research Forum: Tools for Assessing and Measuring Diversity in Medical Education
The Division of Diversity Policy and Programs convened this forum during the 2005 AAMC Annual Meeting to provide a better understanding of how diversity is assessed and measured in education research and how diversity can be measured in the future.

Minority Student Medical Career Awareness Workshop and Recruitment Fair
Workshops introduce high school and college students to minority affairs officers, admissions officers, and financial aid professionals at an annual career fair.

Enrichment Programs on the Web
An online database to help undergraduates find enrichment programs on medical school campuses.

Lessons Learned from the Health Professions Partnership Initiative (HPPI), 1996-2005
This supplement to the June 2006 issue of Academic Medicine contains articles and case studies describing ten years experience with HPPI, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson and W.K. Kellogg Foundations. (Free abstracts, full text available with subscription)

Underrepresented in Medicine
The AAMC defines "underrepresented in medicine" as those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.

Assessing Medical School Admissions Policies: Implications of the U.S. Supreme Court's Affirmative Action Decisions
This 2003 document was designed to help medical schools work with legal counsel to put into practice the U.S. Supreme Court decisions on race-conscious admissions policies.

Medical Minority Application Registry (Med-MAR)
Created to enhance admission opportunities for medical school applicants from groups that are underrepresented in medicine or who are economically disadvantaged.

Minority Student Opportunities in United States Medical Schools
This publication compiles information from every medical school about minority recruitment, admissions, students, and graduates.

Nickens Medical Student Scholarships
Acknowledges outstanding medical students who have demonstrated leadership in eliminating inequities in medical education and health.

Professional Development Groups
Building a national community of leaders to exchange ideas and guide the improvement of diversity in medical education. These include:

Tool for Assessing Cultural Competency Training (TACCT)
Supports medical schools in evaluating the effectiveness of their cultural competency curriculum. Made possible by The Commonwealth Fund.

Nickens Faculty Fellowship
Supports the academic and professional activities of an outstanding junior faculty member committed to a career in academic medicine.

Minority Faculty Career Development Seminars
Encourages a diverse medical school faculty by supporting underrepresented minority and women junior faculty pursuing academic careers.

Why the Difference? An Initiative on Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Medical Care
Raises physician awareness about the impact of race/ethnicity on the U.S. health care system. Sponsored by The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in collaboration with foundations and organizations, including the AAMC.

Minority Physician Database
Establishes a data source to research practice characteristics, their impact on minority health, and the career paths of minority physicians. Made possible by a grant from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts.
