Institute for Improving Medical Education

Can innovations in medical education boost the health of all Americans? How can the knowledge, skills and professionalism of medical students, residents and practicing physicians be better aligned with the needs and expectations of the public? The AAMC established The Institute for Improving Medical Education (IIME), to address such questions. Learn more about the IIME >>

Implementing the Vision: Group on Educational Affairs Responds to the IIME Dean's Committee Report Educating Doctors to Provide High Quality Medical Care cover

A Vision for Better Medical Education

In 2003 an ad hoc committee of medical school deans issued Educating Doctors to Provide High Quality Medical Care, A Vision for Medical Education in the United States with recommendations for medical education reform.  The AAMC’s Group on Educational Affairs has completed its systematic examination of the report, and has issued  Implementing the Vision: Group on Educational Affairs Responds to the IIME Dean's Committee Report.

Chronic Illness Care Education

In partnership with the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation, the Institute has awarded curriculum innovation grants to ten undergraduate and graduate programs, with the aim of stimulating the development and implementation of innovative approaches for educating medical students and resident physicians on the challenges and rewards of caring for patients with chronic illnesses. Curriculum Innovation Recommendations

Educational technologies such as virtual patients, simulation, computer-aided instruction and related instructional methods have given rise to the need for consideration of how these modalities are most effectively applied in the medical education learning environment. Examining the use of educational technologies in the medical education setting, an AAMC convened colloquium on educational technology has issued Effective Use of Educational Technology in Medical Education offering guidelines on the appropriate use of these modalities in the delivery of learning resources to medical students.

Curriculum Innovation Grants Programs

To foster educational innovations needed to address contemporary learning objectives, the Institute has partnered with external grant making organizations to provide external support to medical educators. Learn more >>
