The primary mission of the AAMC's Group on Faculty Affairs (GFA) is to build and sustain faculy vitality in academic medical insitutions. Faculty affairs deans and administrators who make up the GFA strive to advance the academic missions of teaching, research, and clinical care in medical schools and teaching hospitals by developing and implementing policies, programs, and professional development activities that support faculty. Membership

The dean of each member medical school and CEO of each member teaching hospital may appoint to the GFA one or more persons from the faculty and staff who have administrative roles in faculty affairs and faculty development. All GFA members shall have the privileges of the floor in all discussions and be entitled to vote. Details >>

GFA Listserve

The GFA listserve (FACAFFS) listserve facilitates communication among medical school faculty, administrators, and staff, with responsibility for faculty affairs policies and faculty development issues. Faculty affairs colleagues can exchange ideas, post information and questions, and seek solutions using this electronic resource.

 

 

Databases and Web Sites

Faculty Roster
This database generates tables on the annual distribution of U.S. medical school faculty by department, school, rank, ethnicity, degree, gender, primary specialty, and tenure status.

Faculty Personnel Policies (AAMC Login required)
This database contains information on appointment, promotion, and tenure policies of all 125 U.S. medical schools. Data come from an AAMC survey administered to U.S. medical schools every three years. For more information, e-mail Sarah Bunton, Ph.D., at sbunton@aamc.org.

July 2008: "U.S. Medical School Faculty Job Satisfaction" Concerns about the vitality of faculty careers at U.S. medical schools have been well documented, as medical school leaders and researchers have raised awareness about overall career satisfaction, faculty stress and burnout, and struggles with recruitment and retention.
