Project Medical Education (PME) is helping to educate Congress and other policymakers about the process of medical education, the benefits it provides, its complex funding mechanisms, and the essential role of government in providing financial support.
At the heart of PME is a 1½ day program that uses interactive teaching techniques to show participants the complex medical education system and how it is funded. This program offers members of Congress, their staff members, state legislators and staff, and other policymakers information to make insightful decisions on issues that affect the future of medical education.
Participants visit a medical campus and assume roles of a medical student, resident physician and academic physician. They get a first-hand look at what it takes to become a doctor and the financial challenges that face our nation's medical schools and teaching hospitals.
Additionally, PME sponsors special programs and initiatives, such as the AAMC Champion of Medical Education Award, the Fred-Friendly Seminar "The Price of Medical Excellence: the Future of America's Medical Schools and Teaching Hospitals," information sessions on Capitol Hill, and PME alumni events.
Would you consider hosting a Project Medical Education program at your institution? We invite you to sign up for the PME electronic newsletter to share planning and implementation tips and program reviews.
To subscribe, please send your name and e-mail address to Sallyann Bergh at sbergh@aamc.org.
