Women in U.S. Academic Medicine Statistics and Medical School Benchmarking 2006-2007
The purpose of the annual Women in Academic Medicine Survey is
to examine gender distribution of faculty hires, promotions and
leadership positions of students, residents, and faculty at U.S.
medical schools. Each year, we ask Women Liaison Officers (WLOs)
to work with both the Faculty Roster Representatives (FRRs) and
Group on Faculty Affairs (GFA) representatives to collect and verify
survey data. This data is published in November of each year and
is widely accessed as an authoritative, historical source of changes
of women in medicine. This year's 2008 survey will be distributed
to WLOs on May 15, 2008. The survey deadline is June 16, 2008. For
questions about the Women in Academic Medicine Survey, please contact
Jennifer Leadley at jleadley@aamc.org.
Responses to the 2006-2007 annual survey were provided by WLOs,
FRRs, and GFA representatives from 109 of 125 medical schools. Additional
data to supplement incomplete responses was gathered from various
sources across the AAMC, including the Student Records System, GME
Track, Faculty Roster, and Directory of American Medical Education.
The tables and figures listed below report percentages of men and
women in the pipeline of students and residents, examine gender
differences in areas of faculty hire and promotion, and provide
breakouts of the representation of men and women in leadership positions.
On the right side bar, you will find a brief summary, available
as a downloadable PDF, which incorporates short analyses of each
of the benchmarking tables and charts.
