The AAMC signed an April 8 letter (PDF) with 63 other members of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Coalition to “strongly oppose actions to restrict eligibility or cut resources to PSLF,” given the strength, efficiency and importance of the program. The letter also discussed the program’s pivotal role of recruiting public servants to work in rural and underserved areas, including hospital settings. “By ensuring student loan relief for those who work in public service for 10 years, PSLF strengthens America’s schools, hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and military. Without PSLF, many public servants — especially those in rural and underserved areas — would be forced to leave public service for the private sector, where salaries are often higher.”
The AAMC sent a Feb. 21 letter to congressional leadership urging protection of the PSLF in forthcoming budget reconciliation legislation (PDF) [refer to Washington Highlights, Feb. 21]. Additionally, the AAMC joined a March 7 letter with other members of the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP) urging Congress to protect and support programs benefitting student loan borrowers, including the PSLF (PDF) [refer to Washington Highlights, March 14].
