AAMC Letter Writer Portal FAQs
Get Your Questions Answered
What AAMC applications use the AAMC Letter Writer Portal? Why don’t all AAMC applications use this service?
Currently, the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and the American Medical College Application Service® (AMCAS®) (beginning in the 2026 application cycle) manage letters through the AAMC Letter Writer Portal.
Other AAMC applications currently use different systems for managing their letters. After the integration of the AAMC Letter Writer Portal in the SHPEP and AMCAS application cycles, we will look to use this service for all AAMC applications in the future.
An applicant has requested I write a letter, but I have not received the request email. How can I resolve this?
If the applicant sent you a letter request and you have not received it, there is a chance they sent it to the wrong email address, it was routed to your spam folder, or it was intercepted by an institutional email filter. You may ask the applicant to confirm your email address or re-send the request. You can also check your spam folder or institutional filter. Some AAMC applications allow applicants to download a copy of the letter request and deliver it to you by alternate means. If you are still having trouble accessing the request, please contact the appropriate AAMC application for assistance.
Do I need to create an account to submit a letter of evaluation/recommendation?
No, you can submit as a guest without logging in; however, you will be asked for your name, to verify your email address, and accept the terms and conditions. You won’t be able to view your past submission history without creating an account. For more information about submitting a letter as a guest, please see the Request Link as a Guest User job aid.
Can I view request information and uploaded documents related to past submissions?
Yes, but only with an AAMC account. You can log into the AAMC Letter Writer Portal to view this information. You can only see documents that were submitted by you in the following ways:
- You were logged into your AAMC account when you submitted the letter.
- The verified email address used to submit a letter as a guest matches the email address on your AAMC account.
Can I view a document that I previously submitted as a guest if I don’t have an AAMC account?
Yes, but you must create an AAMC account. You will need to create your account using the same email address that you used to submit the original letter, then log into the AAMC Letter Writer Portal.
I have an AAMC account but submitted a letter as a guest. How can I gain access to that letter?
If the email address used to submit a letter as a guest matches the email address on your AAMC account, the letter should be viewable from the AAMC Letter Writer Portal dashboard.
Updating the email address on your AAMC account to match the email address used to submit a guest letter, even temporarily, will give you access to the guest submission. Ensure you have verified the new email address on your AAMC account and log into the AAMC Letter Writer Portal before making further changes to your AAMC account.
Can I make updates to a past submission?
Some AAMC applications allow you to submit an updated document. To do so, you must log into the AAMC Letter Writer Portal as the same user who uploaded the original document. Whether an updated document is appended to your previous submissions or replaces a previous submission varies by the AAMC application. Please refer to application-specific letter guidance and policies to learn more:
Can I withdraw or delete a past submission?
This is not currently supported by the AAMC Letter Writer Portal; however, you can contact the appropriate AAMC application for which the letter is being used to see if the application-specific letter guidance and policies allow it.
Can the requesting applicant see the contents of my letter?
Applicants are unable to access the contents of letters through any AAMC application unless they were the one to upload the document. Please refer to application-specific letter guidance and policies to understand if applicants are allowed to view or upload their own letters.
Can I use Interfolio to submit a letter, or do I need to use the AAMC Letter Writer Portal?
Interfolio can still be used to submit letters in support of AMCAS applications. Please refer to your request email, or this page for more information.
What does it mean if a request status says "Fulfilled by Other User?"
This means that the request has been fulfilled by another user, or you may have fulfilled the request as a guest using an email address differing from the one on your AAMC account. You can only view documents for a request if you are the uploader.
If the latter, see the FAQ for “I have an AAMC account but submitted a letter as a guest. How can I gain access to that letter?”
Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about a request fulfilled by another user.
What does it mean if a request status says "Outside Submission?"
Some AAMC applications allow documents to be submitted without use of the AAMC Letter Writer Portal. Outside submissions include documents sent directly to an AAMC service’s program staff or those transmitted to the AAMC using a third-party letter of evaluation service, such as Interfolio. Options for delivering letters using alternate means vary by the AAMC application and their policies.
Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about a request fulfilled by an outside submission service.
What does it mean if a request status says "Withdrawn?"
The applicant who made the request has withdrawn or deleted the request. Please contact the applicant directly if you have any questions.
What does it mean if a request status says "Expired?"
This letter request has expired, and the application is no longer accepting letters for the corresponding season or application year.
